Laura recently purchased a house. I had occasion to visit recently and shoot a few pictures. Very nice. It has three bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, living room, back & front yard, deck, garage and basement. And, it's in a good area. Try doing that in the Bay Area on a second-year teacher's salary...
